In this article, Corrington and Hebl highlight the ways gender influenced the 2016 presidential election, as well as ways where the USA could progress to become a nation that’s gender egalitarian. It states that while there were reasons other than gender that people voted the way they did in the 2016 presidential election; these reasons still affiliate to the role that gender bias and stereotypes played. Corrington and Hebl conclude the article suggesting four solutions to assure that the next qualified female candidate gets a fair shot at the presidency. Celie starts writing letters to God because she’s repeatedly raped by her father, and gives birth twice as a result of the abuse, but assumes the children have been killed when her father secretively disposes of them. Celie is soon married off to a man she calls Mr._____. In her new life, Celie takes on the traditional role of a housewife and is subjected to her husband's abuse. Celie's sister Nettie runs away from home and comes to live with Celie and Mr. _____. Mr. _____ (who always preferred Nettie to Celie and asked Nettie to marry him first) refuses to allow Nettie to stay in his house unless she rewards him. When Nettie leaves, he follows her and tries to rape her, but she escapes, so Nettie leaves, promising that she will stay in touch with Celie till death. Things change when Mr._____'s former lover, Shug Avery, comes to town and changes Celie's life forever. Shug Avery helps Celie to uncover Nettie's letters to her that were hidden by Mr. ____. Celie begins writing letters to Nettie rather than to God. By the end of the novel, Celie’s new strength pays off, because she is able to live happily with the people she loves.
