TDSB: The TDSB (Toronto District School Board) is the largest school board in Canada. Situated in one of Canada’s most diverse city, the TDSB is perhaps one of the most diverse school boards in North America; over 120 different languages are spoken by TDSB students. By providing various programs, the TDSB does it’s best to cater to the different needs of each ethnic and cultural group. It consists of over 584 schools, and almost 250 000 full-time students. The goal/mission statement of the TDSB is: to enable all students to reach high levels of achievement and to acquire the knowledge, skills and values they need to become responsible members of a democratic society. In fact, after carefully examining the inner workings of the TDSB, the individual schools, and class it is safe to conclude that the TDSB models a system which focuses on the development of adolescences. The development of cognition is essential for students to understand harder concepts. It allows students to make connections to abstract course material, thus helping them learn at a faster rate. This issue is already addressed in Dr. Norman Bethune, as there are plenty of resources to help students develop their cognitive ability. These resources include a fully functional library and many kind hearted teachers that will help students grow. Furthermore, Bethune heavily encourages reading, which is also critical to cognitive development. However, the same cannot be said about all schools across the board. Some schools many lack the resources for development, this includes not having a fully equipped library to aid students. Additionally, some schools may not emphasize the importance of reading like Bethune does, students should be given time to read, this allows students to practice their cognitive abilities, and stimulates growth. This lack of resources and lack of focus on practicing cognitive skills are hindering students from learning, and needs to be addressed at all schools.
