PETM: Director Of Social Media For Indiana Sports Talk

This semester has been heavily focused on communication between working the 150 days of Impact articles for PETM and my internship as Director of Social Media for Indiana Sports Talk. My first day, I did not know what to expect since I had little experience in this area. Coordinating social media for a business/organization is about recognizing your brand and who you are trying to promote the brand to. With over 414 Indiana high schools, there is a lot of spectators to reach in the state of Indiana.
Accepting this internship was my first time getting the chance to hear Indiana Sports Talk. Hearing Bob Lovell interact with listeners, while engaging followers on social media, showed me how important it is to connect with fans. I also realized that those who specialize in social media or communication are in their positions for a reason. One of first tasks that I was assigned along with overseeing the social media is to create a comprehensive email list of all of the boys’ and girls’ basketball coaches in the state. To say that was an easy task is an understatement.

I enjoy applying what I’ve learned in the classroom to my internship. I am looking forward to applying my volunteer and internship experience to my 400 hour internship this summer. I am learning through this internship how important it is to be well-rounded when it comes to accepting an internship. No job is too big and no job is too small for anyone in this industry. There are times when I am asked something that is not communication related, but is important to understand. I enjoy the challenge of thinking through more broadly in my internship and going out of my comfort zone.
