About halfway through the movie, there is a marine that acts nervous when a waitress pours strawberry syrup over another marine’s ice cream, and he has a flashback to when he was helping one of his fellow marines, who had his head bandaged up, across the battlefield. This marine is also experiencing PTSD, as the strawberry syrup reminds him of blood, especially in his flashback. This is another representation of an individual who experienced the war and the battle firsthand and has episodes of PTSD as a result. Specifically related to this scene, PTSD episodes occurring in simple situations like this are not often discussed. However, these are the types of PTSD that are experienced the most, since these are common situations/events to encounter on a regular basis. It is very important to show and recognize these types of situations so that people who have not experienced this have an idea of what it is like, and therefore will have greater respect for this battle that has many surviving veterans. This scene reflects the idea of bushido that many Japanese soldiers were expected to follow and obey.
