For him, he realized his parents were struggle and decided that he want to help them out as well which is why he goes to the fields to earn roughly around sixty dollars a day. The reality of life can often differ from childhood to adulthood. Twelve-year-old Pablo Medina experienced this first hand. There are countless families with impoverished, single mothers with many children of a minority race that are discriminated against. Especially around the 50s and 60s when the novel is set, immigrant women did not have high chances of being hired for a stable enough job to support their family. This then causes the mother to grow tired and weary, too drained to take care of their children like they should. After a while, the neighbors stop caring and ignore them rather than help them, and the children run about without any care for the consequences of their actions. Since her mom “will have trouble lifting her arms over her head for the rest of her life,” Lola is no longer afraid of the “hitting” and grabbing “by the throat” (415,419). As a child of a “Old World Dominican Mother” Lola must be surrounded by traditional values and beliefs that she does not want to claim, so “as soon as she became sick” Lola says, “I saw my chance and I’m not going to pretend or apologize; I saw my chance and I eventually took it” (416). When taking the opportunity to distinguish herself from the typical “Dominican daughter” or ‘Dominican slave,” she takes a cultural norm like long hair and decides to impulsively change it (416). Lola enjoyed the “feeling in [her] blood, the rattle” that she got when she told Karen to “cut my hair” (418).
In Mexican American society , women are deemed inferior to men, evident in traditional family roles, the male is the head of the family who provides for the family , while the woman stays at home to look after the children she is expected to provide for her husband . In the third vignette of ‘The House on Mango Street’ titled ‘Boys and Girls’ the reader is informed of the division between men and women when Esperanza refers to herself and her sister Nenny , and her brothers, “They’ve got plenty to say to me and Nenny inside the house. But outside they can’t be seen talking to girls”. The male dominance begins at a very young age.
Many kids on Mango Street are not expected to go to college, not only because of the low expectations, but also because their families do not have enough money. In a community where the main issue present is poverty, the kids are not expected to be successful in certain aspects and are not expected to achieve great things in life. The Vargas kids, who live on Esperanza’s street, “bend trees and bounce between cars and dangle upside down from knees and almost break like fancy museum vases you can’t replace. They are without respect for all living things, including themselves” (Cisneros 29). As one can see, when a family is deeply involved with poverty, the parents often tend to forget about the children and their success.
Without the traditional community they once would have had in Puerto Rico, there was no intervention to stop child abuse. As a teenage girl, Candy went against her father’s dominate role by running away. It was not uncommon for such instance to occur Puerto Rico. The family faced no shame by a runaway daughter as long as she allowed her lover to have complete control. Usually a girl would have the aid of her community to bring her to a new male-dominate household and away from her father’s abuse (2003: 219).
As a young child, after being told of how poor her houseboy Fido was, Adichie did not believe his family could also be hardworking. “Their poverty was my single story of them. ”(Adichie) She also details how later, on a trip to Guadalajara she was overwhelmed with shame because her only image of Mexicans was the “abject immigrant” due to the “…endless stories of Mexicans as people who were fleecing the healthcare system, sneaking across the border, being arrested at the border, that sort of thing.” (Adichie)a She was caught by surprise when she saw Mexicans happy and at work in the marketplace.

In "Depression Days", Delgado had to change his name and act American to get a job. He just "played pretend" and denied his heredity. Although it was a sophisticated decision, Delgado did the right thing and not do it. But, at the same time, it was a wrong decision because he had to be the only source of strength to his family. They might be suffering from inadequate resources, similar to food, water, etc., or they might be sick and they need medicine.
