Have you dissimilated? Have you ever thought you were going are to be what you pretend? Well, in the "Pink Hat" (by Caroline Bond Day) and "Depression Days" (by Pat Mora), they pretend to be I something they aren't. In the stories, both of them either choose to be something they are not or they have to be what they are not. The main theme that these two stories share is, "don't think about what you will be before you think about what you are now" because in "Depression Days", it says, "...you don't look Mexican. Just change your name and you have the job.". In other words, he is denying his heritage to get a job and support his family, which I think is wrong. Although, in "The Pink Hat", Sarah actually gets to choose to do what she does by wearing her pink hat. She wears it so that people don't know she is black. In "Depression Days", Delgado had to change his name and act American to get a job. He just "played pretend" and denied his heredity. Although it was a sophisticated decision, Delgado did the right thing and not do it. But, at the same time, it was a wrong decision because he had to be the only source of strength to his family. They might be suffering from inadequate resources, similar to food, water, etc., or they might be sick and they need medicine.
This character from "The Pink Hat", named Sarah, makes a bad decision by hiding her true identity under her pink hat. She denied that she was black, but she kept it away from the world. The main theme of this story is "be yourself" because you aren't yourself if you act like something you aren't. Her pink hat wasn't needed when she ran from the accident and went to a chiropodist because of her ankle. She realized at that moment of time that she didn't need her pink hat
