The Greek myths, “Phaethon” and “Daedalus and Icarus”, both share the same theme about pride. Each author uses characterization, conflict and imagery to help show the theme. The character trait of pride that both main characters share shows not to be prideful. The conflict sets the story in motion and leads to the theme. And imagery helps show details and make you feel as if you are actually there. Through the use of characterization, conflict, and imagery, both mythical protagonists, Phaethon and Icarus demonstrate a shared lesson that a prideful disregard of the warnings from those who are older and wiser can quickly lead to disastrous consequences. Both authors show not to be prideful through the character trait of pride that Icarus and Phaethon share. Phaethon, from “Phaethon” shows his pride when he thinks “How many people are watching me, me, me…? But I’m too small to see.” right before ordered the horses to go down. This shows that he would rather show everyone that it is him, not Apollo, riding the chariot instead of following Apollo’s orders and keeping the earth safe. Icarus, from “Daedalus and Icarus” is also prideful. He shows this when he talks to the sun and says …show more content…

Phaethon lies to Epaphus about Apollo, which eventually leads to him riding the chariot. “He taught me to handle their reins and how to make them go and how to make them stop” that was not the truth. Lied because wanted to impress Epaphus even though it wasn’t true. The conflict in “Daedalus and Icarus” was when minos locked up Daedalus and Icarus, which leads to them flying away and Icarus falling. “Paraphrase” locking them up shows that they are going to have to escape somehow. Because they are in a tower, they will have to have a possibly dangerous plan to escape. The conflict setting the story in motion leads to the tragic end that proves the theme
