I completely agree with the palliative sedation in the healthcare system. I think that if you have to use a drug to calm someone down or to help them when a doctor isn’t able too, then use whatever you can. But what I’m not for is using it to end an elderly person’s life quicker just because you don’t have time to deal with them any longer or don’t have the funds to take care of them. I agree where the paper says “Doctors who perform it say it is based on carefully thought-out ethical principles in which the goal is never to end someone’s life, but only to make the patient more comfortable.” You should want the person you love or your patient to be as comfortable as possible so they won’t suffer or go through pain any longer. Morals and common sense also have a play in whether to use palliative sedation. I think the fear of legal action from the family stops many medical doctors from using sedation. My personal back story of when my Aunt had a disease where she couldn’t fend for herself anymore; she couldn’t wash herself, she couldn’t feed herself nor do anything that a normal person could do. She eventually was hospitalized for months and was always in pain. I killed me and my family to know that there wasn’t anything for us to do about how she was feeling. If I would’ve know about palliative sedation when she was ill, I would definitely had her doctors give her the medicine just so she can pass away more peacefully than she did. It is not doing any favors to keep people alive as long as possible for selfish reasons. Being unable to 'say goodbye' is one of the worst reasons. I also realized that not everyone agrees with palliative sedation. Some feel that the doctor or physician or meds are ending their life sooner than they should go and the family isn’t quite ready to part with the love
