The poem, “Pancake Man,” by Jeff Harms contains some excellent qualities. The poem begins with a depressed character, wearing a pancake suit, talking to the audience about being a pancake. Then, he talks about what he does for his work as a pancake man. He does sporting events and birthday parties because he like act. He applied for a job at Denny’s, but got denied because he was wearing his pancake suit. He now has an internship at Bob Evan’s. The poem, “Pancake Man,” is a great poem containing qualities such as humor, understandability, and relatability. The first quality the author used to write the poem was humor. In the poem, the character is wearing a pancake suit because he likes acting. Pancake Man is following his dreams of being an actor. He has been struggling because “I'm afraid the job market seems to be dwindling. Not much need for a talking pancake man anymore.” The Pancake Man seemingly thinks that he will unable to get a job acting as a pancake because there are not any openings for a Pancake Man. Despite Pancake Man thinking the worst, he states “I'm optimistic though. My day will come.” Pancake Man relates to the audience by discussing his real feeling of being depressed because he cannot find a job doing what he loves. He teaches the audience to keep working toward their dreams even if it gets depressing sometimes. A person with an opposing opinion might think the poem does not have a good theme. This critique thinks this because the theme of the story is depressing. They do not think the message of the poem is relevant or important because it is just a silly character in a costume. Another opposing opinion they might have with the poem is that it is not surprising. The critique is not surprised that Pancake Man is unable to find a job because he is just being silly.
