Why should we believe there is a connection between a person’s high school class and their success rate in college? It is admirable that Nemko wants colleges more accountable towards the success of each student entering their campus, but his argument does not seem as if colleges are his target. His argument seems as if it is towards the parents of each individual hoping to get accepted into four-year colleges after high-school. Furthermore, His choice of words creates an image of the author having a one-on-one with every college hopeful’s parent while the hopeful is at the kid’s table listening in. His tone is also undermining, and creates a hierarchy.
As a first generation college student I believe that it is important to help our youth to become more successful individuals. As a college counselor I would be able to build healthy relationships with the students to ensure that that are becoming college ready and are being assisted in every way so that they can continue their education. As a high school student I did not have the resources to effectively help me get into college, but once I was accepted I wanted to make sure that I always helped out as many people as I could. I have helped plenty of high school students with not just finding any school that will accept them, but also finding a school that will fit them. In some cases I have even helped a couple students obtain scholarships
A multitude of socializing agents led me to attend the college at SUNY Cortland. Function, my statuses and roles, and socializing agents are social forces that contributed to my decision of attending SUNY Cortland. The functional perspective states that function is the “contribution a part makes to maintain stability of an existing social order” (Ferrante 21). Clearly, college participates in the function of American society; otherwise many students would not further their education. Positions in society created by humans are statuses (Ferrante 82).
My mother and father have always wanted the best for me, like all good parents do. One of the many things that they expect from me is to receive a college education, something that they never had the chance to do. My parents always advise me to not to make the same mistakes as they did, to go to college so I can get a good job and not have to struggle in my life. With no alternative, my father had to drop out of school to help his family financially after his parents had gotten a divorce, and then he had received his GED.
During the months of september through the beginning of november of sophomore year it was going great i had all my friends, and we’re all happy. Then they started to call me mean names like slut, whore, and started saying i was sleeping around and things like that. The only way i knew to defend myself was go tell the dean the next time they said stuff like this. So i got to school i was talking to my friends Brandon and Jimmy. Then brendon decided to tell me how was sleeping around last night and i told him to stop because first off they knew i told them stop before and they hadn’t.
Today’s admission rates definitely blow away those that were set half a century ago. It just isn’t the same anymore. However, not only does the aspect of getting into college put stress upon Generation Me, the school work itself is something that has become more demanding. Now you hear of professors assigning twenty five page papers, high school students loading themselves with AP classes, and then there’s the topic of competitiveness. Everyone has something they’re good at, and they want to emphasize and boast that talent or skill.

However after getting in the university lots of students found that the college life in reality had a lot of differences with their imagination, from teaching style to relationships with classmates and roommates. Introduction College student’s today face a higher education system that at times can feel like an up-hill battle, with no end in sight. According to a report done by Complete College American (2014) only 19 percent of full-time students at public universities earn a degree in four years, and at state flagship campuses only 36 percent of full-time students earn their degree in four years. This causes stress on the students because of pressures from parents or guardians, economic pressure from the continued cost of education and pressures from society saying they should be done in four years. While a multitude of factors can influence the time in college; economic cost, remedial students, transfer of credits, and major life events; some of these factors can be accounted for and helped to influence in a positive way. This paper will focus on how student affairs professionals can use the four environmental perspectives to help women who are from low-income families succeed in college.
Do you ever wonder what college students fears might be? Do you ever wonder what is going through their mind? In the article “The Student Fear Factor” by Rebecca Cox, it explains many different factors that a college student might be going through. The article gives many point of views from other students and what their thoughts about college was. There are some students who either are incoming high school students or are returning which can be a big fear for them the most because they don’t know what to expect from the campus vibe or even what their teacher can be like.
In “College Pressures” by William Zinsser, leader of one of the residential colleges at Yale University, the author describes the different amount of pressures that students struggle with in college. Because of his position at the university, he constantly noticed the students around him and the anxiety that was radiating off them. He believes that economic pressures cause students to feel anxious about paying back student loans after college. However, parental pressure leads students to make decisions that their parents would be happy with because of the feeling of guilt and wanting to please them.
The vast majority of students enrolled in a college campus are extremely unprepared for the environment. Many students do not begin preparing themselves for the college setting until they have completed high school; however, this decision may be harmful in the overall success of the individual. While early college preparation can cause burnout, physical or mental collapse due to overwork or stress, parents and administrators should encourage students to begin preparing for college ahead of time because preparation will result in students beging ready for the vigirous course work, allow students to be aware of the expectations prestigious universities anticipate, and introduce students to the wide array of opportunities that are available.
These results were important, because they highlight the confidence students possess starting they college careers, and their confidence remains high as the continue through their education. However, students could face some
