The Holy Ghost People by Peter Adair, was created in 1967. It exposes people of the Pentecostal religion, and their unusual rituals and ceremonies that they partake in. While watching the movie I kept on wondering why someone would want to sit through one of their services and participate in such odd rituals and behaviors. After reviewing the sociological theories we have learned in class, I concluded that Durkheim’s Social Consensus theory and Collins Interaction Ritual Chains theory both best explain the motivations for joining and staying in a religion that has such unusual rituals and extreme commitments.

The word “community” can mean many things to different people and everyone has their own opinion on what it means to them. To me community means a group of people who all share the same interest, likes, and who are willing to come together and help one another in times of need. That is why I strongly believe that even if you are on the opposite sides of the world from one another you could still come together and be apart of a strong healthy community. Society is fooled into believing in the applied connection among people. Benedict Anderson’s idea of imagined communities emphasizes that, “… the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion” (5). Members of neighborhoods, cities, states, or countries feel a sense of unity with other members for living in the same place or maybe having the same basic values, but true unity comes from understanding the similarities among each other, considering the impact a person can have on another, and caring about lives. Recognizing the importance of lives being socially intertwined is necessary to sustain a considerate society.
The word community is explained by the Oxford Dictionary as “people of a district or country considered collectively, especially in the context of social values and responsibilities; society.” A community is determined by shared characteristics which could include location, culture, race, or beliefs. The common characteristics of a community can also dictate who belongs and who does not. Maycomb County was a community with a defined structure.

Considering his work, Harrison Bergeron, that seems to be true, a world that worries about equality, generally a good thing, but leads to totalitarianism. Vonnegut criticizes a political issue, the involvement of the state in the lives of individuals and the challenges of changing modern society we face. The author uses his short story to teach a lesson, but a lesson the reader has to conclude for himself. Vonnegut clearly shows the intention of educating his reader, giving him a chance to draw his own conclusion instead of presenting him with a preconceived solution.

When looking at friendship in regards to a community an apparent quality that makes a community function is friendship. Both Aristotle and Kant make important points that are essential to what can make a community driven towards the common good. The common good is going too held up in most cases in the framework of a community by Aristotle’s utility friendship; the next two forms of friendship that are encountered quite regularly are Kant’s forms of friendship of need and taste. Between these three types of friendship one should be able to relate to an acquaintance type of relationship. These friendships resemble many of our interactions that we have with people consistently especially in this culture we are subject to on a regular basis.

They yearn for human connection. As much as American culture might perpetuate individualism, humans cannot cognitively and healthily survive by themselves.
My community placement is at Brampton Caledon Community Living. The community is mostly for adults and people with intellectual and physical disabilities. It works to support and empower all people in the area and it works alongside the community and families in the community. Most of the people that attend the program are adults that live with either their parent(s) or a family member (low income) in Bolton. To help reach out to and accommodate to families with lower income, the center charges a small fee for the adult to attend.
Durkheim’s “science” focused on the moral effects of religion on real life social behaviour, and extended this to the philosophical and even psychological realm as he studied group religious behaviour but it is clear the Weber focused on the effects of religion on the economics aspects of life and the historical development of economic systems. Durkheim argued that repetitive religious ritual had a “conditioning” effect on the individual, which made the individual feel part of the group and behave in ways conducive to the survival of the group. As a result religion created the moral basic of society and held society together on a fundamental level.
