In every story each character has their own feelings and characteristics special to them only. The stories are not interesting without some complexity throughout the tale. Some of the best authors and writers of the human time created intertwining feelings and emotions to describe and shape how the characters are perceived. Shakespeare is one of the great writers of our history. From Hamlet to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he uses contrasting language and intricate opposing factors to make his characters interesting and relatable. Shakespeare integrates juxtaposition, paradox, and oxymorons in Romeo and Juliet to create complexity into Juliet’s character. Shakespeare creates Juliet’s bright and pure quality by having Romeo describe her by using opposite and contrasting language including, “Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon.” (2.2.4). By using juxtaposition, oxymorons, and paradoxes in his character’s speech, Shakespeare creates all of these different intricately woven opposing personalities in one person which adds to the story. Shakespeare also adds a character that she never meet, but instead acts as an opposing and dark force against Juliet. This character is Rosalind. Though Juliet and Rosalind never physically fight, Romeo compares them against each other frequently. Rosalind being the moon and darkness, and Juliet being the sun and light. Juliet’s is also quite taken at first with this boy she has just met. This immediate “love” reflects how gullible and how naive she really is. Some contrast is reflected in Juliet’s words
