Picture this. On Good Friday, April 12, 1963, protester against inequality, Martin Luther King Jr., was arrested for parading without a permit. It is now April 16, 1963 and he sits alone in a Birmingham City Jail cell with nothing but a pen, some paper, and a solemn look on his face. In scraggly, but intent words, he writes a letter. He was writing to the church clergymen, determined to make them change their ways.
The Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King Jr., is as stated, a letter. It is in response to the clergymen who criticized him for being in Alabama. Throughout the letter, King explains why he is in Birmingham. He stated that he was there to negotiate with businesses. Some made promises to King and did not fulfill them.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote “Letter From Birmingham Jail” in 1963. He wrote the letter to explain to his clergyman he refused to wait any longer for his freedom. Dr.King used peaceful protests such as sit-ins and marches across America to get his point across. I disagree with his all peace beliefs. I feel as though protesters should have the right to defend themselves against their oppressors.

Despite this, I took note of your address directly to us church leaders. You described your belief that we would be some of your “strongest allies”, and stated that instead, some of us are “outright opponents”. To that, I object.
Martin Luther King Jr. and other African Americans put themselves through harsh cruelty and dangerous situations to receive what they deserved and what African Americans along with everyone else were entitled to. Martin Luther King Jr. uses many meaningful and interesting quotes in his letter from the Birmingham Jail. In his letter, he discusses injustice and the challenges African Americans were facing during the Birmingham Campaign. For an example, King Jr. demonstrates the hard work African Americans face when he says “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” He uses logical appeals when he uses the term oppressor and oppressed.

Martin Luther King’s Jr. “Letters from the Birmingham Jail” is a powerful piece of literature that denounces racism and segregation. His eloquent articulation of segregation in America truly gives the reader a sense of what he and his people had to endure. After a few paragraphs I could already see King’s pure genius and intellect; his ideas had the ability jump off the paper and embedded themselves into one’s conscious. He made it feel as if you were living this scary, but ever so real life with him. Consequently he used this sheer power to fix an unjust system of racial prejudice, which needed to be altered.
Because of his skill in creating such pieces of writing, as well as his influential role within the Civil Rights Movement, and the reminder that Letter from Birmingham Jail provides of these trying times, his letter should continue to be included within A World of Ideas. Persuasion within writing is an important tool to be utilized in order to garner support for one’s position. During the 1960s, equality between different races was a very controversial issue which required a certain finesse when being discussed. Martin Luther King demonstrated precisely this sort of finesse when writing about the racial injustices faced by black Americans, as well as when refuting the criticisms he faced from white clergymen.
