Whether it is communicating with a coworker to get a task accomplished correctly, actively-listening to a professor for instruction on an assignment, or listening to your partner’s desires and feelings; communication is a key aspect to many, if not all, life situations. In Paris Je T’aime “Faubourg Saint Denis” (2006), listening/communication is extremely important in Thomas (Melchior Derouet) and Francine’s (Natalie Portman) relationship because Thomas is blind. Without good practice of either of these qualities, it causes lots of confusion for Thomas. Through the short viewing of this film we see the whole entirety of Thomas and Francine’s relationship and the most vital roles in their relationship being listening and communication.

Each day he drops her off at the academy and he studies. As time goes on and these events repeat over and over, it seems as if Thomas begins to ignore or tune out Francine and starts focusing more on his exams. As his actions progress, Francine is finding herself screaming “hello?” to Thomas more and more often. This translates to real life because if couples don’t listen to each other it gets harder to stay together. One person might become more verbal or the more outspoken one while the other is quieter and begins to tune the other out. In this instance, Thomas is the one becoming quieter and not listening to Francine to focus on himself. He listens to her enough to know that she’s always yelling but not enough to know why. Being a good listener is big because Thomas must understand what his partner needs or how she feels and how to make it
