In The Glass Castle the main character Jeanette Walls has a very poor life style. She grew up with an alcoholic father who couldn't hold a job. A mother who never had much money and two crazy grandparents. She was in and out of schooling and had many bullies. This is not what most would say is an ideal circumstance to succeed.
Even though some would think that poor families cannot succeed because of financial issues, many paths can lead one to a successful life. Although money may help lead to a successful live Jeanette and Brian show that your will and drive to succeed is much more important than a lifestyle.
Many paths can lead to success, in Jeanette and Brian’s case they grew up with little to no money and didn't always have food to eat. Alas, this didn't stop them from being great Jeanette grew up to be a successful journalist. Some of the problems that Jeanette had was she had a lot of bullies, she was picked on in Battle Mountain, Walls and Arizona. She was also the oldest, which most would think is a good place to be in, but not in that family, her father counted on her for everything and she couldn't always fulfil her father's askings. Brian grew up and was successful as well. But he also had his fair share of problems. He was never as school smart as Jeanette was, he tried very hard to become smarter and eventually

At the start of the book, Jeanette was living in New York and she was always ashamed of her mother. Weather it be the tattered clothes she wore of when she rooted through dumpsters. At the time this seemed very odd. As the book goes on you realize that they had difficult childhood. Although they had a tough childhood their mother was always there for them. This made me question my beliefs because I would never look down on my mother just because she is poor. Jeannette’s mom was always their for her and never just left like her father
