Module 7 Discussion Patron Isabella D'Este By the same token, the women of the Renaissance, like the women in the Middle Ages were expected to perform like housewives. But, the humanist ideas of the High Renaissance provided women with some new opportunities and roles include in becoming patrons. One of these women is patron Isabella D’Este. Isabella was a powerful and well-educated political figure, humanitarian, and patron of the arts. Moreover, Isabella was known as “The First Lady of the Renaissance” (Meyer, 1970). She was born in a ruling family and married to Francesco Gonzaga Marquis of Mantua. So in the absence of her husband due to being out of state or in the battle field, she was the acting regent of Mantua. At a young age Isabella had a variety of musical talents, and could speak and translate Greek and Latin. Furthermore, Isabella was a great patron of the arts, she commissioned many painters to paint her portrait include Mantegna, Titian, and Leonardo da Vinci. She converted the ducal apartments into a museum and invited writers, artists, and poets to her home to exchange ideas. Comparing to what I researched on line the textbook did not give Isabella the value she deserved. There are so many details about Isabella’s and her contribution to life and art that is not covered in the textbook. Another thing, it seems that writers cannot make up their mind about how to spell Isabella’s last name. I found many researches with different last name spelling. After all, in my opinion in spite of all Isabella D’Este’ contributions to the field of Renaissance art collecting she did not get the full respect she deserved, because she was a
