“Have I ever let you down?”(Walls) is a saying often used by Rex Walls in the book The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls. As the author puts it, Rex does often let his family down by dragging them into poverty through his alcoholism. This created many problems for the Walls such as having a lack of food, dangerous people in their town, run down homes and buildings, and sickness. Though the Walls family was faced with many problems they often persevere, becoming closer to each other every time. One of the bigger problems the walls faced was poverty.
She was arrested in 1947 for possession of heroin and pleaded with the court to be sent to a rehabilitation center for help with her debilitating drug problems. She was arrested several more times after her rehabilitation and her cabaret license was revoked by the courts preventing her from working in any Harlem nightclub selling alcohol. After the death of her mother in 1945 her heroin addiction was out of control.4 By the 1950’s she was still denied a license to perform in clubs serving alcohol and this was a major turning point in her career. She was still recording and performing but after the death of her good friend Lester Young in 1959 she had nothing left to keep her together. Even though she asked she was not allowed to sing at Young’s funeral and this devastated her.
However her spirit and fashion has lived on inspiring many to wear her fashion or create similar looks. Starting with the Great Depression: The Great Depression was a major stock market crash that began in 1929 and went on for several years. People were left with no money and they were forced to sell everything they had, which meant they didn’t have a place to stay and sometimes families would have to separate due to the Great Depression. Afterwards became World War II. WWII may have had an impact on her life and art because it was a hard time for everybody, even for years after. It was a hard time in America, but it created a major change within our country.

Her recording career “includes over forty albums and twenty-six singles”, one being a cover of the title song for “Stormy Weather”. Her career won her eight Grammy Awards, two Tony Awards, a spot in the Pittsburgh Jazz Hall of Fame, and national honors from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (pittsburghmusichistory.com). In the 1980’s, after the death of her father and son, she made her way back into the limelight with her award-winning show, “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music”.
In 1943, a sheltered, young, white, middle-class girl was born in a heavily segregated state down South with a population which supported guns and the death penalty, namely Texas. The environment in Janis Joplins’ homestate at the time of her childhood years was very hostile and unethical by today’s standards, although at the time, it was simply a norm protected by law. She recorded more hit songs such as “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, “The Best” and “We Don’t Need Another Hero”, and collaborated with artists such as David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart.
The 1990’s was arguably the greatest decade for the music scene. This decade encountered the rise of the best musical artists and bands of all time. The music from this time was highly thought of because most bands were bringing back the rock and roll sound everyone loved from the late 60’s and 70’s.
