As citizens of the United States of America, a democratic country, it is our responsibility to voice our opinion against laws so long as it is done in a peaceful way. Peaceful resistance to laws has a positive effect on society because it raises awareness, and can lead to change. Lawmakers will never know how society feels about an issue if the citizens sit back and let something they disagree with become a law. The beauty of America is that we are a democracy; citizens have a say in our government. Citizens need to take advantage of this precious gift and have that say in government. Peaceful resistance to laws is vital to raising awareness about a topic. Protests lead to discussions about it on social media and in newspapers, which then ignites the publicity this topic will receive. For example, Townsend Harris High School, located in Flushing, New York, held a peaceful sit-in on December 8, 2016 to voice their …show more content…

When Rosa Parks peacefully refused to give up her seat to a white person on December 1, 1955, she sparked a major peaceful protest with results that echo loudly eve in 2016. Her actions lead to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, in which many black people and white people refused to ride city buses in Montgomery, Alabama because of segregation on buses. Black people were required to sit in the back of the bus, and if a white person asked them for their seat, according to the law, they had to give it up. Since so many people took part in the bus boycott, the bus system suffered tremendously economically, the bus system surrendered, and ended segregation on buses. However, the bus boycott had far-reaching effects too. This movement launched the whole Civil Rights Movement.
