She’d been continually on edge; she’d felt too burdened, too much alone” (Tyler 19). After having to move continuously when married to Beck, “the isolation and responsibility of being a single parent cause such strain for Pearl that she often attacks her own children in verbal and physical abuse” (Henningfeld 2). Pearl is so abusive to her children, “Which of her children had not felt her stinging slap, with the claw-encased pearl in her engagement ring that could bloody a lip at one flick? (Tyler 70).
