The world seemed to be ending as the explosions tore the island into pieces. The reverberations echoed through the air at the Pearl Harbor like a never-ending roller coaster of chaotic sounds. The drops of destruction continued to fall, and though neither said a word, they were both terrified. After what seemed to be a lifetime, silence enveloped them as they crouched underneath the table in the shipyard mess hall. Bobby and Angela held each other tight, almost as if they believed their embrace would save them from the horror that lay outside. The old, three-story establishment was empty, as all of the other patrons had fled when the destruction had started. One of the men swung his fist at Bobby’s face and Bobby retaliated with a punch and he started a fist fight. The five quickly subdued him “Please, I confess, I am a deserter of the U.S. Navy,” Bobby begged. “Are you to tell me that as we were being attacked by the greatest threat this nation has ever seen, you were frolicking with this Jap?” Jenkins spit out his disgust. “I was a strong patriot, but I had no choice,” Bobby weeped. “Even though you were a patriot, you betrayed this country and for what?” “My girlfriend is Angela Nakamura, and she is Nisei. She is as American as you and I,” Bobby said desperately, looking at her to supplement his defense. But Angela said nothing still. Her slender brown eyes darted from face to face as the two men exchanged words. Bobby went on. “Please sir. She is five months pregnant, and I had no choice but to be with her before being sent back to the mainland.” Jenkins did not waver. “Regardless, a soldier knows his duty.” The men were so engrossed, they did not notice the petite five-foot two woman creep around the corner of the bar.
