Does deception play into truth? Deception is the act of deceiving someone, so it plays into truth because the truth isn't always the truth. In the book Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, the main character, Jake, grew up being told stories by his grandfather. He was told about monsters and children who were called peculiars. But when Jake is older, he thinks his grandfather was mental and that the stories were made-up. However, when his grandfather suddenly dies, Jake starts to think that the lies that the stories were, might actually true. So, when his dad brings him to the island of Cairnholm, Jake becomes friends with one of the girls from the island and meets Miss Peregrine. She tells him that all the stories …show more content…
When Jake is on the island, he is at an old inn, "At dawn, I woke to the sound of something in my room. Rolling over to see what it was, I bolted upright in bed. A large black bird was perched on my dresser, staring me down. It had a sleek head feathered in gray and talons that clacked on the wooden dresser as it sidled back and forth along the edge, as if to get a better look at me. I stared back rigidly, wondering if this could be a dream. I called out for my dad, and at the sound of my voice the bird launched itself off the dresser. I threw my arm across my face and rolled away, and when I peeked again it was gone, flown out the open window" (Riggs, 98). Foreshadowing is used because Jake cannot tell if he really saw the bird or if he was dreaming. The bird might be important later because it seemed as if the bird was spying on Jake. This provides to the theme of truth vs. deception. When Jake finds his grandfather on the ground, he tells Jake this, " 'Find the bird. In the loop. On the other side of the old man's grave. September third, 1940.' I nodded, but he could see that I didn't understand. With his last bit of strength, he added, 'Emerson- the letter. Tell them what happened, Yakob' " (Riggs, 33). The person that Jake is talking to is his grandfather before he dies, and Jake doesn't understand what he is talking about which might foreshadow the future. Jake's perception of his grandfather when he was younger, was that he was awesome and that the stories he told, he actually went on those adventures. But now that he is older his perception changed, he now thinks that his grandfather is some crazy, psycho, old man. Foreshadowing adds to the theme by Jake not believing his
