The Peloponnesian War
The Peloponnesian war like most wars started because one nation was scared that another nation was getting too powerful. In this situation those two nations or city-states were Athens and Sparta. Both of these city-states were once very good friends, they had actually fought side by side during the War between Greece and Persia. Most of what we know about this war comes from Thucydides, who was around when the war was happening. (Lendering, "Peloponnesian War"). During this time Athens had control of the many islands in the Aegean Sea, this was done after the war with Persia, so that the Persians could not sail through the Sea to get to Greece again, and they called this the Delian League which consisted of Athens and other city-states. Essentially Athens now had an Empire, which the Spartans saw as a threat.
The people of Greece felt that Athens had become so powerful and would try to control all Greek nations. Sparta also had a league of their own, which consisted of city-states in the Peloponnese and in central Greece as well as Corinth. As soon as boys born in Sparta were old enough to start learning they would be put into military training.
