1. Did the material you chose help to teach the specific skill or strategy effectively? Why or why not? Did you meet the goal of your objectives? Why or why not?
I find that using the story “Penguin Chick” by Betty Tatham was helpful in teaching the skill main idea and supporting details because it was broken down into sections where the main idea was clear. In addition, I thought the graphic organizer I created really emphasized the idea that supporting details are key ideas or facts that tell the reader more about main idea.
I believe I met my objective for this lesson because the students were able to accurately identify the main idea and supporting details. I was able to observe this through the student’s responses to my questions when we completed the graphic organizer together. Additionally, I observed the student’s comprehension of the skill through grading the formal assessment and the extension.
2. Did you achieve success through the use of your assessment? How?

For my informal assessment I used the smart board to engage the students in completing the iceberg graphic organizer I created. The idea behind using a picture of an iceberg half submerged in water was to get the students to see that the supporting details (the portion of iceberg that is under the water) are what build up the main idea. I believe my extension activity worked well because the majority of the students were able to complete the assignment without help. There were only a handful of individuals that need more guidance to reach an answer. Over all, the students seemed to grasp the core concept of the lesson. If had to change something about this particular extension activity, it would be to include more for the students to do. The students surpassed my expectations of the time they would need to complete this
