The purpose of the lab is to acquire the percent composition of zinc and copper. The procedure included obtaining a post 1983 penny and washing it with soap and water. Using a triangular file, we made an X on the penny. Then, we cleaned the top and bottom of the penny with steel wool until it was shiny. We rinsed the penny in acetone and dried it with paper towel.

It is such a nuisance to have pennies these days. No one will pick a penny if they see one on the floor or on the street. People nowadays don 't get excited if they see a penny.

Are pennies worth minting? Many people believe they’re a waste of money, but some people believe that they’re still worth minting. Pennies should not be minted for many reasons such as, the penny costs more money to make then the penny has in value. Another reason is that pennies are a severe waste in time such as people often pay with pennies as a practical joke, which means hard working employees often have to spend the time to count those pennies. The final reason is because the penny is losing the government money.

The complete waste of time and money spent producing these pennies just to be forgotten in the couch cushions is astounding. If every penny is 1.8 cents to produce than the government is giving away 800 million USD every single year. The same article says, “...10 million new useless items punched out by government workers who could be more usefully employed tracking counterfeiters.” In other words, the government isn’t only wasting money on penny production but, also a working staff. Also, since pennies aren't greatly used, by producing them we are wasting money, but if we stop creating them we could be saving millions. According to Jeff Sommer in source 1, “The United States government — that is, taxpayers — lost $60.2 million on the production and distribution of pennies in the 2011 fiscal year, the mint’s budget shows, and the losses have been mounting: $27.4 million in 2010, and $19.8 million in 2009.” (pg.3) This is a good example on why pennies should stop being produced in the United States, by creating pennies millions of dollars are lost. Whereas, if we stop producing them so much more money will be saved.
Did you know that Canada just quit making their penny? (Source 1) They aren't the first of many countries to have made this decision. Whether or not to keep the penny is a surprisingly heated debate. The penny should be removed from American currency for a variety or reasons, it costs too much money to make, it wastes money, and plenty of other countries have gotten rid of it and they're fine.
The U.S. penny once a useful item now a burden on the pockets of the American people. The useless penny was created in 1909, at that time a penny could be used for some things now it takes a dime to buy what the penny could in 1950. The penny is unnecessary and needs to be abolished from the U.S. currency. The time it takes for a person to find that one penny is a waste of time and money, for most people that get paid by the hour they would of lost money waiting to find a penny. I just finished Barbara Ehrenreich’s book Nickel and Dimed and it really heartwarming to read. Cleverly Subtitle “ How (Not) To Get By In America,” The book is about Ehrenreich’s “adventures” in survival as a member of the low- wage workforce that serves our meals, cleans our homes, and cares for our elderly. The book divvied into three sections, each of which find’s Ehrenreich in a new location, looking for new work and a place to live. , she took the job as a waitress at one restaurant before moving to a busier one attached to hotel. The United States should scrap the recycling program. “According to the Tribune News Service, by sending an extra fleet of trucks around town once a week, supporters of recycling actually are not protecting the environment”. First of all, the trucks are polluting the air, the gas in the trucks pollute the air this is bad for the environment. “It’s more expensive and takes more energy and water to recycle old paper than to cut down and process pine trees and then plant pine seedlings”.
Due to the negative effects caused from plastic it will always play a role in our environment. One hundred different chemicals have been created after the 1950s to the current day.
