Performance Appraisal System: Coconino County Juvenile Detention Kaitlyn Robinette Southern New Hampshire University Introduction There are a few types of performance appraisal systems that are utilized within the Coconino County Juvenile Detention Center. However, there is only one system that is effective and is actually evaluated by the manager and director. The center uses discrete scales, rating the employees on a scale of one to five on different aspects of their job performance. This is an effective way to evaluate employees, but managers usually have a tendency to rate employees similar to one another. It could give the manager insight into an employees strengths and weaknesses. Most employees “tend to be more critical of themselves than are their supervisors”(Gladwin & McConnell, 2014). This institution’s appraisal system relates directly to the leadership philosophy within the institution. There is little room for constructive appraisal or employee input. Performance appraisal systems are meant to improve performance of an employee, and to develop an employee. If each employee has the simple job, like a youth care worker in the Juvenile Detention Center, it “leaves little room for improvement with no opportunity for advancement”(Gladwin & McConnell, 2014). Employees deserve to know where they stand within an institution and they need to know how their supervisors and/or manager are viewing them. Appraisal encourages performance and employees need to know that what they contribute to the institution will be appreciated. Those who can take responsibility for actions are never satisfied until they receive some form of feedback. Feedback provides the opportunity for an individual to grow as an employee and set themselves up for future promotion
