How should mental health be handled in juvenile detention centers? How important is mental health in Juvenile Detention Center? Should mental health be addressed in juvenile detention centers? How should mental health be addressed? Is it important for correction officers to be aware of mental health issues? Being able to identify mental health issues and addressing them can help juveniles stay out of the adult justice system. Most of the time mental health issues that aren't addressed can lead to juvenile getting in trouble in their adulthood. It’s sad to think this has happened for years. The fact that juvenile detention center could have started screening for mental health issues year and addressed the juvenile needs right way could have kept a lot of children from growing up and going to jail or prison. We also need to address they fact that once this juvenile get out of detention are they going to be able to get the correct help they need? I feel juvenile courts should make it where juvenile that come into the detention center to receive help should also get help outside of the detention center. It does detention centers no good to help juveniles if they get released and they don’t have the correct help they need. Juvenile are more likely to get in trouble again if they can’t receive the help in the inside and outside of the bars. According to the “Effects on Incarceration on Mental Health” juvenile lack support outside of the detention centers. To me this is sad to hear. If officers and teachers were aware of mental health issues and could address them at a young age they could change a child’s life. I can personally say after screening a juvenile a few times at the South Regional Ohio Juvenile Detention Center it honestly helps the officer know how to act with a juvenile and how to treat them.
