However now, because he uses Internet a lot, he loses his focus of attention after reading some pages. He compares about the past reading ability with the present like “The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle” (Carr 57). Stephen L. Carter saw a future without reading. He saw what life would be like without the complexity of novels and forward thinking. In “Reading For Pleasure Is in Painful Decline,” Carter illustrates how reading amongst people has not progressed but digressed. Simply being at a screening of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and seeing two girls discuss the importance of reading for pleasure, his mind was exposed to the reality of today’s world sans reading and the knowledge that is adhered with it. He justifies that by reading a fiction novel and later moving into more challenging works, people can further the boundaries of their knowledge.
When I was eight-year-olds, I was always told to read a book by my teachers and peers and I absolutely loathed it. One day I was handed an assignment, we were set off to check out a book from the library to read during reading time, which during this time I dreaded. After what seemed like hours, I decided on a Junie B. Jones book that caught my eye. After a brief reading session of one hour, when I finished the small chapter book, at once I decided to check out another one of the books in the series which lead to another one and so on. On average I devote about twenty hours of my time a week reading books.

Practically everyone read one or two books, and then there was the occasional student who 'd managed to thumb through five or six. I was one of the last to be called on. “Kayla?” Mrs. Fisher said, prepared to tack on a book or two more. “Twenty-seven,” I’d said, and smoothed out my filled-up reading log.
However, within hockey, one period is fifteen minutes, and therefore while I was reading I saw a bunch of excitement from both the players and the fans because the Rangers scored twice. To a certain extent, I didn’t even know what I was reading. In fact, I could be ninety percent sure that my eyes were more directed to the TV than Burreson and Couteur’s book. Moreover, the auditory distraction also bothered me the most because I couldn’t distinguish the noises coming from my living room to the words in my head. In fact, there was even a moment that I tried to cover my ears in hopes that it will allow for some minimal concentration.
While it may be true that even if a student is reading Sports Illustrated, they will still become more literate and reflective than if they hadn’t read at all, it is also true that the student is then less likely to read the same desired material outside of class because they are already being forced to read it inside of class. Moreover, if class time is spent reading something such as Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story of Success, the student will be more inclined to read Sports Illustrated outside of class; thus, increasing their reading time altogether. On the report of Engaging Schools: Fostering High School Students’ Motivation to Learn, “studies have shown that students who read outside of school become better readers (Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding, 1988; Fielding, 1994; Guthrie, Schafer, Wang, and Afflerbach, 1995)” (64). Therefore, by engaging in materials which the students may not be interested in during the school day, they will be more likely to read other subject matters outside of school and consequently increase their reading
