The Walls parents have few demands of their children. Rex and Rosemary Walls only expect their children to stand up to fear and for themselves. The Walls parents don’t have and set rules for their children and only expect small things out of them.
In The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls, Rosemary avoids her responsibilities as a parent and member of society by being nonconforming about the expectations she must follow as an adult. When Jeanette explains the new teaching job that Rosemary acquired, she says that her mother “didn't care if her students were late or didn't do their homework” (44). After receiving a job where a primary duty is to instill discipline and working habits, Rosemary instills her personal values that conflict with the general rules of society. This behavior avoids the responsibilities that she agreed to uphold when taking the job of teaching children. The Walls were a very poor family, rarely having enough money for essential items such as food.
In The Glass Castle, there are many problems that need to be solved. The major problems come from the parents. Rex Walls and Rose Mary Walls each have unique personalities. Rosemary is very selfish and only cares about herself. She believes that the world revolves around her.

Rex and Rosemary’s parenting style is permissive because they approach their children as more of a friend than a parental figure, they do not discipline their kids, and they have few demands expected from their kids. The Walls parents act more of a friend than a parent to their kids due to their easygoing nature. Rex brushes off Jeanette's complaint regarding Robbie’s inappropriate touching and does not take action as a normal parent should. Rex had the opportunity to punish Robbie for his behavior but decided not to: “I’m sure he just pawed you some, I knew you could handle yourself” (Walls 213).
The novel, The Glass Castle, shows a detached parenting style from both Rosemary and Rex. Between Rex’s constant struggle with alcohol and Rosemary’s spurs of bipolar depression, the children were often left to fend for themselves, without any help or supervision of adults. The memoir describes that some nights they wouldn’t see their mother, and Rex would disappear for days at a time. Even when Rex and Rosemary were there for their children, they still preferred to rule the household with little interference or guidance. They can’t maintain order the household, nor did they offer any discipline to their growing children.

They constantly find themselves either with a somewhat decent amount of money or at times, no money at all. Jeannette, being one of four children always follows along with and listens to her parents and eventually notices that their family does things very differently than most other families. As Jeannette explains her childhood and how she is being raised by her parents, it is clear to see how different Rex and Rosemary’s parenting style is compared to the parenting style of other parents. Since their parenting style is so different, it seems that it affects their children in a negative way throughout their childhood, but in the end it makes Jeannette become a better and more successful person.

The author, Jeannette Walls, uses Rex and Mary Walls to demonstrate that their strong traits of non-conformity, self-sufficiency and perseverance are passed on to their children, allowing them to develop to their full potential.

For example, their house is unsafe, “moisture ate away at the wooden stairs leading up to the house” I think this shows that the parents never fix anything and just let things go. Because of this, the children always have to live in a home that is falling apart and they all just leave when something goes wrong. This instability causes the parents to fight and is probably the reason neither parent can keep a good job. Another quote that specifically shows the dad’s instability is, “Four days later, when Dad still hadn’t come home, Mom sent me to go get him.”
Permissive parenting style is when parents tend to be lenient and may only step in when there is a serious problem. There may be few consequences for misbehavior because parents have an attitude of "kids will be kids. " Permissive parenting is potentially a harmful style of parenting simply because permissive parents take on more of a friend role than a parent role. Few rules are set for the children of permissive parents, and the rules are inconsistent when they do exist. This lack of structure causes children to grow up with little self-discipline and self-control.
