Did you know that Persephone is the queen of the Underworld and the goddess of spring’s bounty? Persephone is quite a unique goddess because of her personality, her family, her in the Underworld, and her Roman counterpart. One way that Persephone is unique is by her name and personality. Her name means “to destroy” but her personality is the pure opposite of that. In Greek, it is wrote as Περσεφόνη and pronounced as Persefóni. Persephone is also unique because she is the queen of the Underworld, but she is also the goddess of spring’s bounty. Her mother is Demeter and she is the one who raises Persephone. Demeter becomes frightened when Persephone goes missing. She goes to Zeus and then he says he will bring her back. Zeus then finds out that Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds in the Underworld and says she must spend six months there. Persephone’s father is Zeus and that is one reason he agreed to help find her. The other was because Demeter was getting so sad that she stopped caring for nature and everything was dying. She also was the wife of Hades, the god of the Underworld. He kidnapped her, took her to the Underworld, and forced her to be his wife. For days he tried to get her to eat but she refused for she knew that if she ate she would have to stay there forever. Hades was a very sneaky man and the brother of Zeus. He tries to play tricks to get what he wants. In general, Persephone’s family is massive. The Underworld is a dreary place and Persephone did not like it. She was forced to go there and be the queen. She ate the pomegranate seeds and had to remain there for six months a year and then she would get to go back home. The seasons were developed off of this myth. Fall was because Persephone was getting ready to back to the Underworld, winter was Persephone being in the Underworld, and spring came because Persephone was starting to come back to Earth.
