The True Story of Persepolis Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi is a graphic memoir about her childhood up to her young adult era during the Iranian revolution. The purpose of this graphic memoir is to show the audiences the life of a young Iranian girl in the mist of the Iranian revolution in Iran. The main character Marji encounters numerous life events and hardships through out the book, which shape her the person she is today. As we read the book we can question why the Satrapi decides to write this graphic memoir to tell her life story. The research on an interview with Marjane Satrapi will help answer some questions of why she wrote this graphic memoir. Satrapi starts her article out by stating “ We’d see pieces about Iran on television, but they didn’t represent my experience at all. I had to keep saying “No, Its not like that there.” I’ve been justifying why it isn’t negative to be Iranian for almost twenty years” (Satrapi 10) this statement shows how Marjane has gone through criticism about her country in certain parts of her life. The people that meet her think and believe of her experiences in a different way because of how the media portrays the contents of Iran. While Marjane experience the true experience as a young Iranian girl in the Iranian revolution. These misconception of people had about the life in Iran is one of the reasons why Marjane decided to write her graphic memoir to show the life of an Iranian through her lens instead through the lens of the media. Satrapi also states “If people are given the chance to experience life in more than one country, they will hate a little less. It’s not a miracle potion, but little by little you can solve problem in the “basement” of a country, not on the surface. That’s is why I wanted people in other countries to read Persepolis, to see that I grew up just as other children do” (Satrapi 11). With the knowledge that we gained from this research we can see the graphic memoir in a different way. Even though the interview with Marjane Satrapi gave a great explanation on why she wrote the book, but it lacked on the information of why she decided to include the specific part of her life in her book. The research could have been better it there was a lot more articles and information on the real reasons of why the graphic memoir Persepolis was created. With the research done the audience can really appreciated and understand the work of Marjane Satrapi in a whole different level. Even though graphic memoirs aren’t traditional rather than text there should be a new era where graphic memoirs are a lot more common because it gives a better explanation and experience to the
