Making Family Decisions In the book “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, we see the life story of Marji the main character, her life in Tehran, where she saw the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the effects of the war with Iraq. These events affected her life, and the lives of the people around her. At one point in the story, Marji’s parents refuse to flee Iran, and they decide to send Marji to live with her aunt. Marji’s parents made the right decision in sending her with her aunt away from the guardians of the revolution to a safer place to study French.
In the first place, Tehran became a very violent place with the Islamic Revolution going on. It was especially dangerous for young girls and boys. On page 132 of “Persepolis” the consequences of wearing a veil (a piece of fine material worn by women to protect or conceal the face) incorrectly are shown. “Girls had to make winter hoods for the soldiers, but boys had to prepare to become soldiers.” (pg.99) More into the book Marji starts to rebel against her teachers. “I had learned that you should always shout louder than your aggressor.” (pg. 143) At some point she gets expelled, and it was a struggle to find another school whom would accept her for what she had done. Her parents decide to send her with her aunt, and this was a good idea since just like her father said, “There’s a French school in Vienna. One of the best in Europe!” (pg.147) Then again, Marji’s parents were saying they would meet her there, and they would visit, but on page 148 her mother says, “We feel it’s better for you to be far away and happy then close by and miserable.” Marji knew they probably wouldn’t meet her over there.
