Successful empires have similar factors for success, but the Persians had a unique way of growing their empire: treating their targets as guests. The other successful empires always had a downfall because their ruler was either too brutal, tiring, or too costly. Persia kept going as they treated the people they invaded with gentleness. The factors that allowed Persia to build the largest empire of all time are gentleness, respect, good infrastructure, and a good government rule because when Persians invade other cities, they do it by helping them and supporting them, growing Persia more peacefully, building more and more infrastructure that will help Persian’s wealth on food and money grow even higher. Instead of treating the war prisoner with brutality and violence, King Cyrus untied Croesus and according to Croesus stated, “Cyrus untied his hands and sat him down close to him and treated him with great respect; he and all who looked upon Croesus were impressed”(Source D). Croesus questioned King Cyrus what he would do with his land, King Cyrus answered truthfully and had a growth mindset that ‘all good things would be theirs” (Source D). Next, King Cyrus had retired from power in 530 BCE and let King Darius rule in 522 BCE. King Darius was different from King Cyrus. While King Cyrus conquered peacefully with almost no heavy rules to the target, King Darius conquered with killing intent and had taxed the people of Persia heavily. According to source F, the Royal Road “is said that there are as many horses and men posted at periods of time (or space) as there are days required for the whole trip, so that one horse and one man are assigned to each day. And neither snow nor rain nor heat nor dark of night keeps them from completing their selected course as quickly as possible.” The Royal Road was one of the biggest infrastructures that helped Persia, spanning over 330 miles from Lydia to Phrygia (Source F). This big road had many rest stops for the horses to make the travel faster and more efficient. Darius’s Canal was a narrow waterway that allowed ships to travel directly from the Nile River to Persia, since this is closely related to the Suez Canal, this is considered an engineering feat. This helped Persians to trade with Egypt, which had lots of rich resources. Persia’s borders helped facilitate who goes in and out of Persia, enhancing the security of Persia and reducing less crime. Satrapy Borders are borders within Persia that indicate which area and to let King Darius control Persia more easily.
