Personal Action Plan
A two page report on the history and current scope of the problem, including one primary document that best explains the problem:
To me, an important civic issue is gun violence in the United States and also how it affects Canada. Gun laws have been part of the United States Constitution since 1791 when the ten amendments came into effect. The second amendment stated that “a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Meaning that people of the United States have a right to keep and bear arms. Later, the Gun Control Act of 1968 imposed age restrictions for the purchase of handguns, prohibited felons, the mentally ill, and …show more content…

The gun manufacturers are impacted by this issue because if guns are taken away, they would not get as much business and could result in their bankruptcy. Therefore, their preferred solution is that guns are kept legal. The NRA (National Rifle Association) is impacted by this issue because it is a nonprofit organization that promotes law enforcement training, firearm safety, marksmanship, and hunting and self-defence training. The NRA is based on the premise that firearm ownership is a civil right and is protected by the second amendment. Therefore, they are against the taking away of guns. The government is a stakeholder because they are involved in deliberating for and against weapons bans and background checks. Therefore, any decisions they make will be put against them if the public does not like it. The students are against giving guns to their teachers to counteract gun violence and school shootings. The teachers also share the students’ perspective as they do not want …show more content…

The Prevention Institute recommends to reduce easy access to dangerous weapons, reduce firearm access to youth and individuals who are at risk of harming themselves or others, engaging responsible gun dealers and owners in solutions, insist on mandatory training and licensing for owners, and require safe and secure gun storage. This plan can be very effective because all aspects of the plan not only reduces gun violence but also does it in a way that can be achieved at home, in schools, and in the communities. The New York Times recommends to approach the issue by having background checks, banning guns for people under the age of 21, have safe storage for guns, enable straw purchases, ammunition checks, ban bump stocks, and have ‘smart’ guns. This plan can be very effective because the background checks, ban of guns for people under 21, ammunition checks, and safe storage all help to make sure that guns stay away from those who should not have them. Plus, banning bump stocks and having ‘smart’ guns all ensure the safety of people. Finally in 2011, Obama recommended to require universal background checks for anyone trying to buy a gun, to have Congress restore a ban on military-style assault weapons and a 10 round limit for magazines, and to have Congress make it easier for law enforcement to do their
