Personal Disclosure As a manager supervising 13 staff members, I have has my fair share of personal disclosure and confessions between me and my colleagues. Both are pertinent in any working environment. Daily, we are asked to spend 8 or more hours with other people, so as a result you get to know them. You recognize their strengths and shortcomings. We are all human and require relationships to function. It is difficult to truly separate business and friendships because they essentially go hand in hand, consequentially develop into working relationships. Janeen, the manager, tried to relate to Kathleen, the staff member, as a manager and as a friend. Kathleen’s work performance had diminished over several weeks. She was missing deadlines and showing up late for work. Janeen clearly noticed something different in Kathleen’s behavior and wanted to sit her down privately to discuss the matter. From a manager’s perspective, Janeen wanted to evaluate whether she was going to keep Kathleen onboard. From a friend’s angle, Janeen truly wanted to help Kathleen in any way she could. Janeen reassures her that her drinking problem is not the reason and that they are removing a total of 5 people. And Kathleen just happens to be the first because she has had the shortest amount of tenure. Janeen presents the severance package to Kathleen. Kathleen still in full emotion is baffled by the amount and state that is will not last her a month. Kathleen goes on to threaten Janeen and the company by getting her a lawyer. Janeen remains calm and tells Kathleen that she emotional and is being paranoid. Kathleen explains that she knows her self-worth and will be getting a lawyer because this is
