Personal Essay: How Hockey Has Changed My Life

Did you know that 1.64 million people around the world play organized hockey? I really love being one of those 1.64 million people. I use hockey as a stress reliever, friendship maker and, a learning moment. Hockey has helped my life in so many positive ways, such as creating lifelong friendships. I love hockey. It’s my lifesaver! What’s yours?
One reason I love hockey is because it relieves my stress. Once I hit this ice my mind goes into “Hockey Only Mode”, and I don’t think about anything else. One way it relieves stress is by exercising and moving my body. It is proven that when you exercise you release extra endorphins to help relieve stress and create more happiness. My teammates also relieve my stress by making me laugh and be silly, to get my mind off of school. When I score it also relieves stress. I play defence, so knowing that I scored, it tells me that if I get scored on I won’t be as stressed because I have a goal. Hockey is a great way to relieve stress and have fun with teammates.

My coaches have always been ones that will support you through wins and losses. If you are having a bad game they will always try to cheer you up be cracking jokes and making the game more fun. They are also great role models off the ice. They always show us what to do to be better people, such as buying the meals for the whole team to just simply saying please and thank you. I’m thankful that my coaches have always been willing to push be to me the best I can be even when I don’t want to. Many times each week I won’t want to stay after practice to lift weights and do dryland training, but I’m thankful they do. They have made me from a little weakling to being strong.
