What makes a person great? For many people, it may just be someone who has accomplished some “superhuman” feat, or a person who was able to go against all odds and reach new heights. In my opinion, someone who is great is still a definition that is very popular now, it is simply just someone who has had a massive influence on a particular field that has inspired a multitude of others following in their footsteps. I selected three individuals who are deserving of the title of greatest living humans due to their contributions to the sciences. These people are Elon Musk, an entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX, Margaret Hamilton, a software engineer, and Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon. For instance, when Musk was younger he and Kimbal owned the 3rd existing IBM personal computer in South Africa at the time(1). Although, like most kids Musk was interested in video games but he was also an avid learner, At the age of nine he began to teach himself how to program and by the age of 12 he was able to publish his own video game called Blaster(1). Not only does Musk have a strong drive to learn about anything that interests him, but he also possesses a keen eye for monetary gain, almost like he was born to be an entrepreneur. Musk never passed up an opportunity to make money so shortly after publishing his first game he sold it to a gaming magazine for $500(1). Musk was even aspiring to create an opportunity for himself, at the age of 13 Musk and Kimbal had an idea to open an arcade in Pretoria near their school(1). However, this plot fell through due to the two of them needing parents signatures in order to have hopes of getting a permit to build an arcade there(1). Showing this kind of ambition as a kid is not unprecedented in spite of this, Musk was able to show his ability to actually follow through with his plans instead of leaving them as kiddish dreams. This person is one of America’s first software engineers Margaret Hamilton born on August 17, 1936, in Paoli, Indiana as Margaret Heafield and the oldest of three children(2). Hamilton leads a fairly normal life, she graduated from high school and enrolled at Earlham college where she was crowned homecoming queen and met her future husband James Cox Hamilton(2). Soon after their graduation in 1958, they got married and Hamilton had her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and soon began teaching high school math and French courses(2). Towards the end of 1958 the couple moved to Boston as James got accepted into a graduate program at Harvard Law School, they decided that she will work instead of also entering a graduate program near Boston(2). This resulted in Hamilton teaching herself computer programming which was in its infancy in 1958 for her new job at MIT, but first, she worked at Lincoln Labs near the school(2). As a woman, at first, she was given very low priority work such as maintaining a program called “forget about it” because it handled cases that were extremely unlikely to happen(2).
