WITCHCRAFT By Town of Salem (ft. Reverend Hale) “Morality, like art, means drawing a line someplace” (Oscar Wilde). Throughout The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Reverend Hale’s morals are tested throughout the story, showing his evolution from the belief that Salem was tainted with witchcraft, to having to draw the line and prove the innocence of a simple farmer named John Proctor. Hale converts over to believing John Proctor and quits the court because of the blunt ignorance shown by the townspeople of Salem; he goes from absolving Tituba and all of the girls, then to having his doubts about the “witchcraft” happening in Salem and asking John Proctor about it, and then finally to siding with John Proctor and all of the convicted people of Salem.
In the Crucible, by Arthur Miller, two of the most important characters are, Mary Warren and Reverend John Hale. The story takes place in Salem, 1692, when supposedly witchcraft ran rampant. John Hale gives us the knowledge of witchcraft and puritan beliefs, in the story, in order to decide whether someone was a witch or not, while Mary Warren assists Abigail Williams in the false accusations presented in order to alleviate the punishment they were facing for the actual practicing of witchcraft as well as dancing. In the story John Hale is intelligent while Mary Warren seems to want good, but is too nervous to take a stand on it.

In the play "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, the characters John Proctor and Reverend Hale face several changes throughout the play. From the beginning of the play we are informed that John Proctor has had an affair with Abigail Williams knowing this we watch his downfall between his wife, the town people, and most importantly himself. Within the play Reverend Hale is portrayed as a very religious man that has signed many death warrants on those who were accused of witchcraft, later in the play he tries to save those who were accused because he had realized he was wrong to sign off their deaths.
Reverend Hale is the character that changes the most in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible because his feelings on witchcraft turns from full belief to unbelievable doubt, his thoughts on Proctor changes from thinking that he is evil to thinking that he is a good and honest man, and he switches from doing God’s work to doing the Devil’s. Character Analysis of Reverend Hale “We can not look to superstition in this,” Reverend Hale states, before subsiding in the fast-paced fervour of vengeful accusations ahead (Miller 1149). In the play, The Crucible, Reverend Hale has been summoned by Reverend Parris to Salem to investigate supposed witchcraft. Conceiving himself as a “young doctor on his first call,” Hale becomes too cocky and he falls vulnerable to manipulation, which serves as an opportunity for the residents of Salem to legally accuse one another of witchcraft (Miller 1148). Hale goes into Salem so determined on finding the truth only to result as one of the heads in charge of this whole ordeal in the courts.

Hale also wishes for Proctor’s confession so he does not have to feel responsible if Proctor were to be hanged for his witchcraft accusations.
Goodness and nobility is determined by an individual’s morality and their willingness to follow a virtuous path in their life. It is also determined by the ability of an individual to acknowledge their shortcomings and become more self-aware. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is a good man as he showcases righteous morals and principles. This is shown, as he ends his affair with Abigail, protects his wife and his friends’ wives, and dies to preserve his integrity and honour. First, John Proctor shows his goodness, by refusing the physical advances of Abigail, who wishes to continue their love affair.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller has many lessons to learn from. One of The major lesson I thought that is important is honesty. The accusations throughout the story were built on lies from those trying to protect their own name, and putting the town into confusion. Nobody in Salem, Massachusetts felt like they could trust anymore, after all of the false allegations made. If Three characters in the story would have been honest from the beginning, the town would not have been in such confusion.
