In order to maintain social and societal stability, the criminal justice system is comprised of many processes that seek to accomplish this. The main components are: law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Correctional officers supervise work to ensure those convicted of a crime do not violate their agreements and play an essential role in the justice system by overseeing the daily custody of offenders. This topic intrigues me because all I know about the correctional officer field, is what I have heard on the news or seen in movies/television programs, and popular culture’s depiction of this field doesn’t seem to portray them in the best limelight. You have certain requirements that need to take place to advance to a Correctional Officer 2 and above. You are required to have 3 years Correctional Officer experience plus a 2-year degree to advance to a Correctional Officer 3 (Sergeant). In order to advance further to a Lieutenant, you need so many years’ experience plus a degree. It definitely helps to have a Criminal Justice Degree when entering this field but it is not required. As long as you have a 2-year degree or further you should be considered for employment.
How did you prepare for this work? If you were entering this career today, would you change your preparation in any way to facilitate entry?
If I had the foresight to know I’d be working in this career, I would have prepared more by getting a 2-year degree in Criminal Justice or something within the field. With that knowledge, you will a leg up and have an easier time transitioning and will have a quicker timeline for advancement.
