Personal Narrative: A Career As A Military Officer

In Oct 2004, I joined the US Navy Reserves with the desire to be an Officer. I joined the Reserves under the advice that I would have a better chance of being selected coming from inside the Reserves. I applied but lacked the technical degree needed to be a competitive candidate at that time. I choose to stay in the Reserves and serve in enlisted ranks. I am proud to say that I have served in the US Navy Reserves for ten years. My time in the Reserves has been invaluable. It has refined my critical thinking skills, heightened my ability to apply myself and most importantly, it has made me a leader. Prior to transferring from NOSC Wilmington NC, I have served as Leading Petty Officer, leading an Operational Support Unit of 60+ people. I wrote evaluations for my sailors, submitted nominations for Blue Jacket and Junior Sailor awards with 5 of my people receiving the award in a very competitive NOSC …show more content…

I’ve had to battle social-economic hurdles, overcome mistakes I made as a youth, and continue after not being selected as an Officer or as a Chief the first time. As I have learned, it is not trying and falling down that defines you but whether or not you are willing to get back up and try again. Lesson Two, always try to get out of your comfort zone! One does not grow unless pushed to learn new skills, and step out to do things that you are not accustomed to doing. If I was selected as an Officer, I would be a valuable leader for my enlisted sailors under me, but I will also be an asset to the Officers over me. I would bring to the table a great deal of technical expertise, and ability, as well as a base knowledge of how things work for the enlisted part of the Navy. I have a great balance of technical skills, and people skills. Whether selected or not, I will continue to be a leader in the Navy Reserves, but I feel as an Officer in the US Navy Reserves, I could do
