Personal Narrative: A Career In The Army

Caitlin March thought she was going to spend the rest of her life in the army. After high school she attended the United States Military Academy and trained there for two months. When she discovered that she was going to be separated from her family and rarely get the chance to see them, it was then that she started to think that it was not the path she wanted to take. “While I was at the military academy, it changed what I thought I wanted in life. So I had to stop and think about what I wanted.” Caitlin explained what it was like to realize that she would have to start over. School
The army led Caitlin to nutrition, and she attended the Pennsylvania College of Health Services, where she developed an interest in nursing. “I realized that it is easier to fix people than it is to tell them what to do and what they can and cannot eat” she shared. “I was able to combine nutrition and medicine.” Schooling was mostly science and hands-on learning at the hospital for her. “I am scheduled for four, eight hour shifts, so it depends on if I am on day turn of night turn. If I am on day shift I wake up at 5:15. When I work on evening shift I am able to do studying for my masters program and I will leave for work at 2 PM and get home around 1AM.” The things that she views most important in her job is her fellow employees. Caitlin describes the group of people she works with as very supportive and friendly, as well as her boss. “I also find it very important that I have flexible hours, so then I can attend family events and do my schoolwork” she shares.
