Personal Narrative: A Day At Ward Melville

In life we sometimes face negative events. We have a choice to benefit from circumstance or suffer. On september 9, 2014, I encountered a negative event that I benefit from today. September 9, 2014 is a day that I will never forget. This was the day I would play my first varsity football game. It was an away game against Ward Melville. We took a yellow school bus out to Ward Melville. On our way there, I was sweating like someone working in a warehouse with no air conditioner. It was 95 degrees that day. My teammates and I tried to stay hydrated by drinking as much water a we could. Sitting alone in my seat, I tried to stay focused on what I needed to do during the game. I went over the plays in my head so that I would not forget them at game time. In a Cover Three, Cover Two and a Cover One, I envisioned myself making tackles and getting interceptions. The national anthem played loud through the speakers. My heart raced at a rabbit’s pace as the song ended. Before I knew it, I was lined up on the field for kickoff. The referee blew the whistle and play began. Feeling like a small and out of place sophmore, I thought that I was not ready to play. I forgot my role in the play as I ran down the field to make a tackle. I was searching through the blockers like a tiger targeting prey in a herd. The runner eluded me. Crack!!! My teammate fell on top of me. Something was wrong. I found myself laying on my stomach after the play. My leg felt limp. When I rolled over, I realized that my foot was turned ninety degrees to the right. Negative thoughts went through my head. Will I walk again? Will my leg be amputated?
