In the year of 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested on and placed in jail. While there, he wrote a six page letter to the clergymen of Birmingham on why he had a right to be there protesting. In order to persuade them, he used ethos, pathos, and logos in his writing. King’s letter not achieved his original goal in proving his right to protest, but the letter now provides an example to today’s generation on how to peacefully protest the problems that are faced today.
As a peacemaker and an outspoken leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has done a lot to end segregation in the United States of America. His own imagination filled with millions of hopes that one day everyone can learn to accept one another put him in very difficult situations in which he was not afraid. In 1963, Dr. King wrote a letter from the Birmingham Jail to a clergymen that freedom has to be given to everyone no matter what race they were. Dr. King fought for the rights of African Americans because they were separated from doing all the things that the Whites were able to do. He decided to take a step and fight for everyone.
Thesis Martin Luther King, Jr., through the use of eloquent writing and appeals to emotion, refutes several local religious leaders' criticisms of the his and the SCLC's outside involvement and nonviolent direct action taken to draw attention to and build support for the end of segregation, not only in Birmingham, but all of the United States. Main Points First King refutes idea that he is an outside agitator that doesn’t belong in Birmingham, as he and several members of his staff were invited to the city by a local affiliate organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He also asserts that his involvement there is valid, as “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” as communities are connected and affect each other indirectly.
King was a sonorous voice for African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. He refused to give in to the comfort of laziness and decided to conquer the discomfort of discipline. Dr. King listened to God who presented him with a miraculous gift of writing, public speaking, and standing for equality. He was able to relate to this gift by relating to God as he held true to this faith and belief. In a corrupt society where he was constantly being degraded and belittled, he embraced his calling to persuade others to fight for social injustice.
Dr.King wanted all African Americans to be treated equally, he wanted freedom for his brothers and sisters. He urged people to stand up and push for freedom in a nonviolent way but the road to freedom was not easy. You had to be willing to lay down your life even if it meant you could end up dead, he states “Others have marched with us down nameless streets of the South. They have languished in filthy, roach-infested jails, suffering the abuse and brutality of angry policemen...” (King 274) Dr. King describes the experiences of what they had to endure, these are the experiences the people who joined him had to face.
He wanted his work to benefit his people and all of humanity," (source 2, para 5), was said of George Washington Carver, another activist, but can just as easily be applied to Dr. King. Dr. King was exposed to much suffering, such as his jail time for protesting. He took these experiences, as well as his education, and wrote of them in ways that inspired millions. He was both an eloquent speaker, as well as someone who spoke the truth, cold and hard as it was. King was also a good leader. Dr. King was quite the opposite of Malcolm X, though he did not like violence and showed people that you do not have to use violence to make a point, Dr. King never used violence in his contribution to the civil rights movement. kept a lot of people safe that is why a lot of people followed and listened to him because they knew there was a less likely chance for them to be harmed or killed while following Dr.king rather than Malcolm X in paragraph 5 Dr. King stated “not a single person has been killed in a non-violent demonstration” and he believed violence was an important part of the problem in America and it kept the races separated as in paragraph 9 Dr.king stated “violence causes more problems than it solves” but then again Malcolm X never asked for a fight he was just brought into one and never backed down from

Dr. King was no exception when it comes to letting religion influence his decisions, throughout his role in the Civil Rights Movement he fought racism with emphasis on non-violence resistance. Although Dr. King’s use of non-violence resistance led to him being arrested multiple times as well as physically assaulted. Dr. King used major influences such as Mahatma Gandhi and The New Testament to encourage others who resisted racial inequality by reminding them to love your enemies even if they hate you. An example of a time Dr. King used non-violence resistance would be the Montgomery bus boycott, where African American’s refused to take the bus to protest against segregated seating. King dedicated his life to using nonviolent methods to help for the advancement of colored people. Dr. King did a lot to of things to get black people right where we are today. He wasn’t scared to share his ideas or dreams no matter the cost. In fact, on many occasions, he was sent to jail for standing up what he thought was right. But Dr. King 's legacy of nonviolence and standing up for what was right had a huge positive effect on not just America but worldwide.
A hero is a man or woman that leaves their known world to go off into the unknown world, and go make a positive impact. Heroes aren’t just the big strong super heroes that can fly and shoot laser beams out of their eyes. There is more behind the superheroes than just killing the bad guy. For example, Batman was called to adventure when his parents were killed and he was sitting right there watching. Bruce left his home town to go out get training to become a crime fighter.
We should not just take Dr. King’s work for granted, but rather be grateful that he did what he did. I know that I personally am very thankful for him because I have many friends who are colored and would be treated differently today if he didn’t step into action. Without him, our world would be a very different place. Martin Luther King showed us that violence is not the answer. The truth is, he is exactly right.
