I sat down on the warm, silver bleachers with a plate of food in my lap. The junior varsity softball coach was about to start going through the participation awards for all the girls who played this season. I was eagerly waiting for the end-of-season awards to be announced. My name was called for the participation award, and I went up onto the dusty field to receive it. “She’s always had a great attitude, and she has been very supportive of her team mates. I’m glad that I got a chance to coach her this season,” the coach says after handing me my certificate. Afterwards, I walk back up to my spot on the bleachers, next to my best friend Ozlyn.
Oz and I met through a softball team that we were on together a while back, so we’ve both watched each other grow as athletes. The coaches finally finished handing out the participation awards and announced that he was now going to announce the winners of the end-of-season awards. “I’m gonna win something,” I thought, “I have to.” These awards were the best part to me, because this is what the people on your team think about you, not just yourself or the coaches.
