At my high school, the Beta Club is the most elite, respected, and prestigious club. It is filled with the leaders, the doers, the hard-working, and the individuals who turn their dreams into reality. It is not for everyone, and in our ever-changing society, that is clear. Most people today do not like to rise up to the ever-growing challenge of leadership. It takes a certain kind of person to be a good leader, and the Beta Club has greatly helped me in doing so.
Baseball is what many call “America’s Pastime”. It is the game that never fails to bring me from the highest highs to the lowest lows. The second that you think you are the best, the game will humble you. When you are at a loss for confidence, you will do something amazing that will turn your game around. Nothing beats the smell of the spring air, the dirty pants, the laughs with teammates and the glory of winning.
For over two years I have been blessed to be involved in teaching young children. When I had begun to help at Kids Zone it quickly changed into a transitional period. The administrator, Melissa Cooke, moved to Michigan six months after I had started helping and so it was being run temporarily by the Fisher family for a few months. Unfortunately when Melissa left, the entirety of the volunteer staff stopped volunteering. It was up to the Fisher family and I, five unqualified people to lead the Kids Zone program every week.
“I am the President of my 4-H club.” When I say these words I am proud. I am proud of all that I have learned through 4-H, and how it has allowed me to grow. 4-H has impacted me by giving me the skills to reach my full potential.
When I was young, money was not a big deal when I asked for something. If I wanted it, I begged my mom to get it for me. I never understood why I was unable to get the new toy that just came out, or the new shoes that every girl was about to have on Monday morning when I walked through the doors of Gretna Middle School. The summer before I started middle school, I decided to join a volleyball team. Needless to say, I fell in love with the game and continually tried to better my performance.
My Vision For America 's Youth would be to help stop bullying and make a difference in the world . A challenge I want to address would be to help start a chain reaction to stop bullying . A chain reaction is something that happens when one person does something and it influences others and causes them to join in . In October of 2015 I recently experienced a very serious and emotional assembly at my school .
I vividly remember the event that unfolded as I stood on the edge of the basketball court, waiting for our turn to perform a drill. Sweat dripping down my face and my body, resting against the wall, attempting to catch my breath; my mind was peaceful and focused on the moment. However, this calm was rudely interrupted when I heard “Joseph don’t talk, you suck at basketball.” At that moment I gained the realization that I was acting in the same manner as the people in my middle school, acting as a bystander as someone was barraged with negative comments. I was even worse than people that were expressing the comments, as while they may not possess the maturity to understand the consequence of their actions; I did, and did not intervene.
Throughout my life, 4-H has made an impact by shaping me into the person I am today and leading me on the path to become who I want to be. I have been given many opportunities to broaden my horizons, develop critical life skills, and make experiences that will always be with me. I was raised in the small town of Milan, Michigan. As I grew older, I heard so many stories about my father’s experience in 4-H. I wanted to have the same opportunities to experience what he did through 4-H. At the age of 6, in late 2004, I took part in my first 4-H project, the Protégé horse program in Washtenaw County where I was able to borrow my mentor’s horse for show. This group allowed me to expand as a person.
Over the last fifteen years, I have grown mentally and socially. I credit my growth to my ability to analyze and understand the world for what it is. Social imagination is the use of information to understand the world and ourselves for who we are. Possessing the quality of mind that can develop reason and the capacity to shift perspectives are the basis of social imagination (Mills 2000). As I mentioned in reflection one, I came to realize that my way of thinking is what helped me overcome living a poor lifestyle.
Where Have All The Children Gone Socialization amongst the young has been severely damaged by technology and online media such as Facebook and Twitter. Alleys and parks that once contained multiple groups of children now seem quiet and often dissolute. Even at home children have less peer interaction, they get their social impute through text messages and the internet. The games they play together are often done from separate households. Game rooms, ice-cream parlors, bowling alleys, and gyms are often lacking the youth who used to seek each other out in the past.
Work with children Throughout my high school and college years, I have had several experiences with children that have all played a part in shaping my love for working with children. During high school, I spent two summers nannying for two young school aged children. Working with these siblings really made me realize how much fun I have working with children and watching them grow. Once I came to college, I started another babysitting job working with two four year old twin girls.
Socialization starts from the very beginning of one’s life, and one’s experiences and environments affect how a person is socialized. Various agents of socialization such as family, school, mass media, religion, and friends played vital roles in shaping who I am now. Like many people, I was raised by my parents and grew up with two younger brothers. My family had embedded many values into my mind, but I would only be reflecting on the most notable ones I could remember. First, as a child, I remember being called “OA” (overacting) often by my father, which drove me to be somewhat withdrawn and become more conscious of and careful about how I react to different situations.
