I still live in the same apartment that I grew up in, and, while my parents have tried to give me as much as possible, much of the expenses I have for school and living are money that I have made at my job. I am the first child in my family to graduate college, and in doing so I have inspired my younger brother who will soon by attending a four year university as well. Currently, my father works two jobs as a janitor and as a factory worker, and my mother cleans homes, and much of the financial compensation they receive goes towards paying rent and food. This scholarship will alleviate much of the financial burden that myself and my family members currently face.
A part of breaking free is is making educated decisions and thinking for yourself. Phillis Wheatley was a slave who had a wonderful talent. Phillis was blessed because she was taught how to read and write, most black people at that time didn’t get the opportunity to learn. If she wouldn’t have been taught to read and write she would've been just another slave that no one would ever hear of. Phillis would have never been famous or been able to have a better life if she hadn’t had an education.
I don’t really know why I was invited into National Honors Society, for I know I do well with grades but, my grades aren’t what define me. My actions are what define me. Who I am is someone who is always trying to be someone better morally. Someone who is trying to be smarter than they were the day before, even if it 's just a little.
Getting chosen to get this scholarship will me get more motivated to attend a 4 year college, and it will also help my parents. Due to living in a low income family, college can be very difficult. I come from a family where, we do struggle at times. Getting this scholarship will be an honor and will save my family and I money. My family is very supportive towards my career goals, which is to become a Register Nurse so I can help people around the world, and one day make an organization to help people whom also struggle.
I can contribute my hard work to the Honors College community. I think that I am hardworking and I love to work with others to help solve problems because two heads are always better than one. I would contribute my ideas to the lessons and help others when they need it. I love to be able to work with other people outside my comfort zone and be able to hear their ideas and combine ideas to come up with something that will benefit everyone in the community.
My post-secondary education is very important to me because it will shape who I become in the next 10 years. My family is not the most financially stable and I unfortunately have to try and find a way to pay for college myself. This scholarship would help take away some of the burden of finding a way to pay for it all. I believe that I possess good time management and study habits.
I believe that I should be awarded this scholarship for many reasons. The main reason why I should be awarded this scholarship is because I have learned to have courage. Developing courage has enabled me to take risks, be a decision-maker, and a responsibility-taker. By having courage, I have learned that the fear will never go away as you continue to grow. The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it.
Since I was a sophomore in high school, I strived to be accepted into UC Berkeley. Back then, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study, but I knew I wanted to be surrounded by people who appreciated education as much as I did. I spent hours reading, studying for the PSAT, and taking all the AP courses I feasibly could. Unfortunately, I did not go to UC Berkeley straight out of high school. Instead, my home life got in the way.
I already know I will need to be paying for the majority of my college tuition, which is why I have worked so hard and had a job since I was 16. I know many students around my financial status whose parents are paying for all of their college, but for my family this isn’t the case.
