“Darn” I said to myself as I slowly jogged out to my spot in left field, swatting gnats and mosquitoes as I went. “If only he’d give me a chance!” I thought, “I know I can play catcher at the same level as anyone out here!” But there I was, warming up in the outfield with the center-fielder and hoping, just hoping, I’d get some action. “At least it’s a really nice evening for a game!” I thought as I turned to catch the breeze on my face. “Play ball” shouted the Umpire, as I got into a comfortable stance to watch another boring inning of “infield baseball”. One instance in particular stands out though. I had asked if I was going to catch that night and the coach, to my surprise, said yes! I was written in for the sixth inning, which was second to last because we only played seven, and boy was I excited! Well, the 6th inning rolled around, and the game wasn’t going exactly in our favor, but I was confident that we would win. I got up and stretched and was about to start gearing up when coach called me over. “Hey Tyler, come over here a minute.” “yessir” I said as I jogged over to where he was leaning on the fence watching. “This game is a little too close for comfort and I think I’m going to put Brooks in to close.” He said. “He throws hard and fast, and they can get a little wild sometimes too.” He continued. “You think you can handle it?” “I’ll do my best, coach.” I said, but he didn’t seem to like that answer. After a long pause, in which I shifted uneasily a few times, he said: “I think I’m going to put Mason in for this one, and we’ll put you in next game.” “yessir” I said as I slowly trudged back to the bench. “Remind me that I owe you one!” he called back to me as I sat down, but I didn’t really hear him.
