Personal Narrative: Mrs. Gross's Home

I was 7 years old in second grade when I went to Mrs. Gross’ house for piano lessons. Her house was near my school, Navy Hale Keiki School in Salt Lake. She lived in a small townhouse neighborhood that was quiet. It was a sunny afternoon, I was wearing my purple studded shirt, denim shorts, sparkly light up shoes, and rainbow striped backpack. We got to where she lived at about 3:20 p.m. and found a parking space. When she opened the door there was this chilling gush of air from her air conditioner and fans which gave me goose bumps. Her house smelled like pumpkin and vanilla because of her Bath & Body Works Pumpkin Marshmallow Vanilla scented candle. Her walls were white and she had a brown couch with a clear glass table where my mom sat during my piano lessons. When we got in her house Mrs. Gross said, “start practicing your C scale and then practice your F scale.” I immediately began practicing my scales. The bench was black and a cushion was on top that made it feel as if I was sitting on a pillow. The keys were so cold from the A.C. I had a chilling sensation throughout my body. I started pressing the keys a little harder because I got annoyed with not remembering the G and F notes. I stopped with the new song I was learning for a minute and looked around. Mrs. Gross did photography as a hobby so there were amazing photos of different places in her house. There were pictures of her and her husband on their wedding day and beautiful landscapes of places around Hawaii. After looking around I started to play the new piece again thinking that after taking a minute break, I would be able to play “A Happy Song” easier because I calmed down a little. Although I took a very small break it didn’t help because I still had trouble with remembering what the G and F notes look
