Personal Narrative: My Experience With Autism

Besides the things I learn in school, I have been able to gain knowledge from other places as well. With my brother having Autism, I have found a huge interest in that topic and have been able to learn so much about it since his diagnosis. It has also allowed me to get inspired to do more about finding a way to treat Autism and maybe one day even finding a cure. When I was about 5 years old, my brother Michael was diagnosed with Autism, which is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as social interaction. Since I was so young when he was diagnosed, I didn’t quite understand why my brother didn’t talk to me or act normal like all the other kids I knew, which saddened me since I didn’t have a real relationship with him. Also, I never could understand why he did the things he did, and why he couldn’t stop and just be like everyone else. As I grew older, his impairment got worse and he wasn’t acting the way kids his age did, and my parents still didn’t quite know how to explain it to me. Even though I heard the word Autism all the time, I didn’t know what it was exactly. That’s when I decided that I was going to learn more about it and see why my brother was the way he was. With my knowledge I have acquired about Autism, I have been able to speak about it to others and inform them about this challenging unknown disorder, which I hope to fix in the future. Starting young and learning about this not only inspires me to work my hardest to get rid of Autism, but also encourages me to be a better sister to my brother who has so greatly improved with all the help my family and supporters have given
