Many individuals experience different amounts of failure in their lifetimes. Many learn and grow from their defeats and others let it keep them from succeeding. I made sure that failure was another obstacle to success. Icons like Randy moss didn’t let failure get the best of him when he didn’t make the freshman high school football team, and look at him now, he is one of the best Football players of all time.
I will never forget that moment, when I caught the ball I took off, I juked to the left causing my other teammate to fall then I hit a spin move and cause another teammate to miss, I then ran for the touchdown. Ever since that moment the coach started me at running back every single practice and game. For it to be my first year playing contact football I excelled tremendously in our league gaining recognition from coaches that taught higher weight classes and also coaches from different
On a cold, frosty, snow cover night in November at Welcome Home Stadium, was when my life changed. That night, two teams played for the chance to call themselves champions of 6th-grade football. All game, my team and I battled against the mighty Wilmington Hurricanes. We fought all game to win and finally we got the ball back with less than under a minute left and down by 4 points. The crowd was quieter than a church mouse as my coaches huddled us up during a timeout, and in that timeout, my coaches looked to me for answers.
When football season finally arrived, I found myself on the varsity team. I thought it was going to be a repeat of my past two seasons of me just being another benched player. But I actually started for more than half the season as defensive linemen. Even on games where I didn’t start, I was getting a lot of playing time. That really pushed me to be even better for my senior season.
When my favorite basketball team, the Boston Celtics, played in their season opening game on October 17th, I would not have dreamt that I would be leaving the room in tears after having flashbacks of the biggest setback in my lifetime. Celtics player Gordon Hayward suffered a serious leg injury early in the game. While many people were disappointed that one of the Celtics’ best players was injured, I sympathized for Gordon because I truly understood what he was going through. The biggest setback of my life came on September 1, 2015, just before my sophomore year of high school.
Summer was at full blast, Sunday league was starting and I was playing soccer every single day. I was ready for the next season of high school soccer to come and I was training myself to the limit because I wanted to be one of the best players on the field and to possibly be captain for varsity this year. This year was also the year our new coach, coach Jay was in charge of us because Olivier had left last year to to go to Michigan with his wife. Jay had already seen how well of a player I was because I played in his soccer club and immediately placed me in the varsity roster but as a defender and not a striker. The transition was difficult but I learned fast.
I felt that I could finish the game, and I wanted to get a little revenge for what the defensive tackle did. Although this was not a serious injury, I did learn from this. During that game I was wearing knee braces which receive the credit for saving my ligaments from tearing, and my season from ending. I learned that I should have a safety blanket that would protect me from possible harm. Just like when we would run to our parents in times of danger.
I started to realize some dreams were just too big. I couldn’t throw 100 MPH and didn’t have lightning fast speed. I realized I wasn’t going Pro in baseball but the most important thing I took away from it was the life lessons learned. The first lesson is about hard work.
Moving from elementary school to middle school meant moving to the other side of the school with all of the high schoolers. I felt like I was becoming older, gaining more responsibilities. In middle school I was reunited with my friend, Coleton Reed. This time, he was in the same grade as me. My favorite part about being in middle school was being allowed to play sports for the school.
When I partially tore my ACL I had to show grit not to give up playing football. It was during warmups for a football game in 7th grade. The offense was all lined up with me as an outside receivor with Derrick on the inside. When Nick hiked the ball I raced to the cornerback ,who happened to be Ethan Goodwin, and started blocking him. Then the whistle blew so I looked over at Nick to see what happened and realized that that he had just thrown the ball.
There was sweat on my face I didn’t know what to do. I was riding in a silver Ford F150 it was the first game of the season I was super nervous and I waited and waited to get to the field. Then like that we were there at bromfield industrial field I was so hyped but nervous I. Grabbed my baseball bag and rocketed towards the field. A couple of friends were there already so we got our arms loose and started our sprints man those things were so tiring. I went to the dugout to chill.
So, I blew off the injury like it was nothing and slept with it broke for a couple of weeks. After having enough of the pain, I decided to go to the hospital about it. The result of the collision was a broken collar bone, that according to the doctor could go into my lung and puncture it if I ever played football again. Little did I know that God had a greater plan for me than being a football playing sergeant body
Towards the end of last year I had no aspiration to playing football; my mind was actually set against ever playing football again. However, after spending a lot of time with the team in and out of the gym and weight room I began to fall in love with the atmosphere and decided that I wanted to play. On the other hand, this was a very unpopular decision in my house, because my mom was very against the thought of me playing. My moms biggest problem with the sport was the chance of me getting a concussion. I first made my decision one day when we had just finished our after school lifting session and coach Hoekstra had asked all non-football players to leave the room so he could talk specifically to the players.
Fast forward to the Fall of 2014, and I am in my 3rd yr in football, and I was killing it. I was starting cornerback, andwe won a championship. And I just went to Tennessee for a football tournament with kids that were a grade above me. Everything was going so well for me, but the one thing I was missing was a touchdown.
The first time on a football field and i was very hyped about it cause i got to play and the coach put me as starter because i was the biggest one on the field. The very first play we got sacked but are left lineman didn't stop the ball they got pushed over and we got sacked. The ball was on the 25 yard line and we were trying to get to the fifteen yard line to get the first down and we were short 10 yards but we could still get cause if we work hard you play hard.
