Towards the end of last year I had no aspiration to playing football; my mind was actually set against ever playing football again. However, after spending a lot of time with the team in and out of the gym and weight room I began to fall in love with the atmosphere and decided that I wanted to play. On the other hand, this was a very unpopular decision in my house, because my mom was very against the thought of me playing. My moms biggest problem with the sport was the chance of me getting a concussion. I first made my decision one day when we had just finished our after school lifting session and coach Hoekstra had asked all non-football players to leave the room so he could talk specifically to the players. Before this day I had been pondering my decision to play and how I would bring it up to coach Hoekstra. In that moment it hit me, this was the perfect opportunity for me to announce that I would be joining the team. I had it planned out in my head I was going to walk in the door, throw my shoes in the cubies set up in the laundry room, hang my bag on its hook, and then go straight to my mom to announce my decision right then and there. Nevertheless, this isn’t exactly how thing went. I was immediately distracted by the strong scent of grilled chicken, corn, and mashed potatoes. I had planned on the conversation being a private one, instead it occured in front of the rest of the family after we had said grace and begun to eat.
